Be careful when someone places a large order while claiming to represent an established company. A familiar company name, professional paperwork, or a cheque does not prove that the person is authorized to buy from you.
Watch for warning signs
- Large first-time orders with pressure to release goods quickly.
- Last-minute changes to delivery addresses or pickup arrangements.
- Different people handling the order, payment, and collection without a clear explanation.
- Buyers who resist independent verification.
Before releasing your products
- Confirm the buyer. Call the company using a phone number you find independently—not just the number the buyer provides. Confirm the person and the order.
- Verify the delivery address and who will receive the shipment.
- Speak with your bank about payment verification and the risk of a cheque being returned.
- Keep records: emails, messages, invoices, delivery records, and pickup details.
