From Mexican Fields to a Canadian Garlic Farm: A Journey of Hard Work and Resilience
Introduction
Born and raised in Mexico, my cousin and I grew up working in the fields. From a young age, we learned the value of hard work, patience, and determination. Those early experiences shaped who we became and prepared us for the challenges ahead.In our early twenties, we made the life-changing decision to leave Mexico and start a new chapter in Canada. The beginning was not easy. We faced many challenges, but we carried with us the same work ethic we had learned in the fields. With determination and faith, we kept moving forward.
Roots in the Garlic Fields
Our journey in Canada eventually led us to garlic farming. During the summers, we worked for garlic farmers in their fields, helping with the hard work of harvesting garlic crops. we enjoyed working outdoors in the summertime, and those long days in the fields gave us valuable experience and a deeper understanding of garlic farming.Over time, we developed a deep passion for growing high-quality garlic. What began as hard work in the fields became something much greater: a commitment to producing exceptional Canadian garlic and sharing it with families, farmers, and businesses across the country.
Diversification: LED Lights and Business Ventures
In 2015, we expanded into a new business venture by importing and distributing LED lights. At the time, LED lights were expensive and not always easy to find in Canada. We saw an opportunity to provide quality products at more affordable prices.Through dedication, long hours, and a focus on serving customers well, the business grew. This experience taught us more about entrepreneurship, customer service, and building something from the ground up.
Adversity Strikes: COVID-19 and Innovation
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought unexpected challenges. Our LED lights business slowed down, and many people were left without steady work. Like many others, we had to make difficult decisions and find a new way forward.Instead of giving up, we looked for opportunity in the middle of uncertainty. We combined business funds, personal savings, and government support, and made the bold decision to invest in garlic farming on a larger scale.
A Green Transformation
That decision changed the direction of our business. We planted garlic on a larger scale, creating outdoor summer work for our families and other hardworking people in the community.During a time when many were unsure about the future, our garlic fields became a place of hope, purpose, and opportunity. What started as a response to hardship became the foundation for something much bigger.
A Blossoming Future
In 2020, we started with 15 acres of garlic. With the support of our customers, workers, family, and community, the farm continued to grow year after year. By 2025, we proudly planted 80 acres of garlic. This growth represented more than just acres in the ground. It represented perseverance, partnership, and the belief that hard work can turn challenges into opportunities.
